What is missed-call text-back?

By Eric Berg · Last updated August 2026

Missed-call text-back is a system that sends an SMS after an unanswered call. The useful questions are not just “does it text?” but: what triggers it, which number sends, how fast it runs, what consent and disclosure apply, who sees the reply, and what happens next.

How it works

A common setup uses conditional forwarding or a telephony event to detect the unanswered call, then sends from a configured SMS-capable number. Some systems only send an acknowledgement; others continue the conversation or create an owner alert. Those are separate capabilities and should be tested separately.

Why seconds decide it

Speed affects usefulness, but “five seconds wins every time” is not an honest claim. Track delivery time, replies, qualified conversations, booked work, opt-outs, and failures. A fast message with the wrong sender, unclear consent, or no follow-up lane is not a working system.

Text-back and callback are different claims

A text acknowledgement, a two-way SMS conversation, an automated callback, and a human callback are four different behaviors. Do not bundle them into one promise unless the exact line has been tested. Hire Whoever's core proof is the employee audition and owner-facing call record, not a universal promise that every missed call triggers every recovery action.

How to get it

Choose the narrowest system that solves the real problem. If you need a business-specific phone employee, Hire Whoever starts with the recruiter call, approved brief, verified authorization, and a limited real-line audition. Keeping the same employee after that audition is CA$149 per month, cancel anytime.

Fair questions

How fast does missed-call text-back need to be?

Faster can be useful, but there is no universal deadline that guarantees a saved job. Measure response time and conversion on your own calls.

Does missed-call text-back work on a landline?

It can, depending on the carrier and service. Conditional forwarding, sender number, provisioning, and setup time vary; verify the exact implementation.

What should the text-back message say?

Short, human, and useful: who you are, that you saw the miss, and a question that starts the job - "we're on a job right now, what do you need?" No links, no marketing.

Build the employee on your actual business and test each promised behavior.
