Will customers actually talk to an AI?
By Eric Berg 路 Last updated August 2026
Some will; some will not. There is no honest universal acceptance rate. The right question is whether your callers can complete the approved job without confusion, deception, dead air, invented facts, or a missing human handoff.
What a caller actually experiences
The experience should begin with the approved business identity鈥攐r only the employee name if the business name is still unknown鈥攖hen one useful question. The employee answers from approved facts, collects the defined intake, and treats requested dates as requests for owner confirmation. Unknowns stay unknown.
The honesty policy
Every Whoever employee tells the truth when asked: it is automated. We do not claim that every caller will forgive or prefer that answer. The point is simpler: conversion is not permission to deceive. The policy is stated in the terms and should remain true on the live line.
Where AI receptionists fail - honestly
Dead air. Scripted acknowledgements. Inventing an answer. Quoting an unapproved price. Promising a slot that does not exist. Treating a fragment as a fact. Pushing through a sensitive or regulated call. The controls are an approved brief, explicit hard lines, owner-confirmed requests, call records, correction by text, and human review for higher-risk roles.
The only proof that counts
Not a category essay鈥攁 call to the employee built from your brief. Start at (587) 316-5288, correct the written brief, authorize the limited audition, then call from both the owner's phone and another number. The transcript, owner summary, and branded call card are part of the proof.
Fair questions
Do callers hang up on AI receptionists?
Some do and some do not. Dead air, scripted language, wrong facts, and poor turn-taking can make abandonment more likely, but test the actual line with real callers.
Should an AI receptionist pretend to be human?
No. A Whoever employee answers honestly that it is automated when asked. Honesty is required even when disclosure affects conversion.
What calls should an AI not handle?
Anything needing real human judgment - complex disputes, sensitive situations, regulated advice. A good employee recognizes those, takes a clean message, and hands them to you.
Do not take the essay's word for it. Build the employee and test the real line.
